Hidden Healthier Fast Food Choices

This year I am hitting the BIG 50.

While it is part of life and I am so thankful for each day, I find being a business owner, homeschooling three kids, trying to keep an extremely busy hubby happy, and still spending a few minutes checking out pictures of my grandchildren on Facebook leaves me on the go most of the time.

At first I succumbed to the typical viewpoint that fast food could only be found in fast food joints. There is a big down side to that. The main one being I did not want to sacrifice my health, or my family’s health with lousy nutrition.

I began scouring my local stomping grounds for food that helped me instead of setting me back. I found I could eat healthy just about anywhere if I wanted to work a little at it.

Want proof?

I went to what I thought would be an almost impossible place to eat healthy. Our local gas station convenience store.

I found packages of nuts and seeds. Cottage cheese and a variety of yogurts were neatly aligned among all the store -made sandwiches and pastries. Apple slices, watermelon, and even grapes in individual containers were easier to find.

But I hit the jack pot when tucked in a corner shelf were hard boiled eggs. There was even a combo pack of cheese slices with hard boiled eggs. With these choices I easily grabbed a prepackaged salad added my hard boiled eggs for extra protein and bought a pickle to enjoy on the side for my lunch. Now I don’t do this often but it is nice knowing that I can locate really great choices even at the gas station.

Other options?

Beef Jerky - This protein source doesn’t need refrigeration so many stores carry it. It makes a great choice if you are traveling for the very same reason.

Tuna or Salmon in a Bag - These single serving size wonders can be added to salads or just eaten right out of the bag. Again since they don’t need to be refrigerated you can take them with you anywhere. Don't forget to ask the clerk for a fork.

Applesauce - Kids love this option. As adults we don’t often think of looking in this aisle for healthy choices. Beside applesauce other fruits can be found packaged in single serve containers nearby.

Don’t be afraid to look a little if you are in a time crunch for these hidden treasures. They are there waiting for you to discover them. I was pleasantly surprised to find food fast without it being Fast Food. Now I know I can fuel my car and at the same stop fueling myself. That's a win/win in my book!

Where do YOU find healthy food choices in unexpected places?
